Port fee increases come at a cost to Tasmanian Business.

The Tasmanian Logistic Committee (TLC) is concerned with the recent announcements concerning the rental increase at the Port of Melbourne.

Tasmanian exporters already face a huge disadvantage to export costs. Any increase widens the gap and chokes competitiveness for the State. The majority of Tasmanian exporters have no choice but to utilise the Port of Melbourne for their shipping requirements.

We are also concerned about the future ramifications this may have for our domestic shipping providers.

This issue highlights the need for the Tasmanian Government to be engaging with the Victorian Government on the future lease of the Port of Melbourne and its ramifications for Tasmania. We understand that Minister Hidding will be approaching the Victorian Government to discuss the matter.
